If you are unable to surf the web, and probably you have a phone that is connected, you are still good to go. Connecting other devices to your phone's network connection typically requires specific plans from your service provider. It will also eat up your mobile data volume quicker than the phone would itself. If you want to connect your laptop or other devices to your phone's data plan, follow this guide.
1.Tethering an Android Device
1. Tethering sharing resources between two or more devices with a specific connection. Your Android phone provides either USB tethering orBluetooth tethering or creating a wireless hotspot.
USB tethering is best if you are ONLY connecting one device (that has a USB port) to your phone. In case you want to connect multiple devices, or devices with NO USB port, that a better alternative for you is the wireless hotspot. If you are only connecting one device, it is advisable to use USB tethering if no available. It has more security than the wireless connection.
Another risk at using a wireless connection is that, anyone can connect and start using your data. To disallow this, you have to set a security password to your hot-spot. You can do this by going to the hot-spot settings.
Tether your phone to your laptop
1. Connect your phone to your laptop via the USB cable. Now, open your'Settings' by pressing your Menu button and selecting the Settings icon, or open the Settings app in the App Drawer. Under "Wireless and network", click"Tethering and portable hotspot".
Note: You may have to click "More Settings" in order to find this option. Different Android systems will be structured in different ways, but the general steps are the same.
2. Check the “USB tethering” box. This will begin sending network data to your laptop. A blue connection icon (or so) will appear in your phone's notification bar.
If you are running Windows XP, you will need to download the “tetherxp.inf” file from the Android website. The file will need to be installed when you connect your phone to your computer for the first time. Uncheck the box to stop sharing. You can also disconnect the USB cable to stop sharing.
3. Create a wireless hotspot. If you need to connect more than one device to your phone's data plan, you'll want to create a wireless hotspot. Be aware that this is less secure than using USB tethering.
Open your Settings by pressing your Menu button and selecting Settings, or open the Settings app in the App Drawer.
Under “Wireless and network”, click “Tethering and portable hotspot”.
You may have to click “More Settings” in order to find this option. Different Android systems will be structured in different ways, but the general steps are the same.
Check the box labeled “Portable Wi-Fi hotspot”. Depending on your device, this may be a slider labeled “Mobile Hotspot” or something similar. Slide it to turn it on.
Your phone may verify that your data plan allows you to create a mobile hotspot. If it does not, you will be given instructions on how to activate the service for your phone.
4. Tap the “Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings”button to configure the name of your wireless network, as well as the security. It is highly recommended that you secure your network to keep unwanted users from accessing the network and draining your data plan.
2.Tethering an iOS Device
1. iOS devices are also provided with these two options USB or Wirless hotspot tethering. USB tethering to a PC on an iOS device requires iTunes to be installed.
Another risk at using a wireless connection is that, anyone can connect and start using your data. To disallow this, you have to set a security password to your hot-spot. You can do this by going to the hot-spot settings.
2. Turn on the Personal Hotspot. In order to enable tethering, you will need to turn the function on through your Settings. you can do this by tapping 'Settings' and then tapping 'Cellular'.
In the Cellular menu, tapPersonal Hotspot. If your plan does not allow tethering, you will be given instructions for contacting your carrier.Flip the Personal Hotspot slider to the ON position. Choose your connection method. The default connection is via USB only. If you want to connect via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, tap the “Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth” button.
3. Connect to the hotspot. Once you've enabled the Personal Hotspot, you can connect to it with other devices. If you enabled Wi-Fi, the network will appear as [i]"your name's iPhone". The password will be displayed in the Personal Hotspot menu. You can change the password if you desire.
